Legislator of the Year Award

2010

Recipient of the 2010 Legislator of the Year Award

Representative Hugh Holliman

Legislator of the Year is awarded to a legislator that has been an advocate and or sponsor for significant public health legislation.

The "smoking bill" or House Bill 2 was significant public health legislation in our state.

Represenative Holliman was the primary bill sponsor of House Bill 2 and leader of the legislation as it moved through the House and then the Senate. While passage of this historic legislation required the work of countless individuals including bill co-sponsors, health advocates and members of the public Representative Holliman was clearly the foundation of House Bill 2.

Representative Holliman along with his co-sponsors educated their peers and others about the hazards of secondhand smoke, the costs to our state and the personal loss to families when someone becomes ill or dies prematurely because of someone else's choices It was an uphill climb with opposition all along the way, but this important piece of legislation will have a tremendous positive impact on our state now and for years to come. A special thank you to Representative Holliman for all his work on this legislation.

Please join me in congratulating Representative Hugh Holliman as the NCALHD Legislator of the Year.
