Gibbie Harris became Health Director of the Buncombe County Department of Health at a time of great change for the Buncombe County Department of Health. She has successfully led the Department and its staff through the many challenges and changes while at the same time maintaining staff morale. She is highly respected by the community, the state and most importantly by those who work with her. On a local level, Gibbie has made a difference in public health in every community in which she’s been. In 1989 she was responsible for opening the first Hospice freestanding inpatient facility in N.C., located in Caldwell County. She has been involved in and management of HIV/STD programs in Wake County as well as the State as Prevention Program Manager. In Wake she brought together the Wake County Gang Prevention Partnership and served as Chair from 2004 until leaving Wake in 2009. In Buncombe she’s been a member of the Smart Start Board, Chair of Health Partners Board and on the Innovative Approaches Steering Committee. Her Letters of Support will most likely give some specific details. Gibbie is an effective leader by the standpoint that she draws the best from each of us and nudges us out of our comfort zones to our benefit and ultimately to the benefit of the community. Congratulations to Gibbie Harris, NCALHD Health Director of the Year. |
