Health Director of the Year 2010
Jerry Parks

Rodwell Drake

This award is given to individuals who have been a health director in North Carolina for at least 5 years, who have not been President of the association during the past 2 years, and who exemplify leadership in public health at the local and state level. The NC Health Director of the Year Award was sanctioned by the NCACC and implemented through the NC Association of Local Health Directors.

Jerry Parks met all of these criteria and more and was selected from a highly qualified pool of nominees. He is known as a fearless leader. He and his staff of over 400 have expanded services far beyond those normally provided by a local health department.

Jerry is an active member of the NCALHD, has served as a committee chair and headed up special committees at the request of the association president. He has been known to say what others are thinking during our association meetings.

In addition, he has been appointed to public health committees by the governor, serves on the Accreditation Board, the State Health Council and the NC Alliance of Public Health Agencies. He has always worked to secure support from the NC House and NC Senate for the good of public health.

Back at home he serves on several community boards, has served as a member of Town Council and surprisingly enough is an ordained deacon in his church. His agency provides everything from adult day care to solid waste management for a seven county region in the North East. For these and many other reasons, the NC Health Director of the Year is Jerry Parks
