The recipient
of the 2008 Health Director of the Year is Dr. W. Rodwell
Drake, Jr. of the Granville-Vance District Health Department.
The North Carolina Health Director of the Year Award is sanctioned
by the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners
(NCACC) and implemented through the North Carolina Association
of Local Health Directors (NCALHD) an affiliate of the NCACC.
Dr. Drake
not only serves as the health director but as the medical
director and continues to actively provide clinical services
in both health departments. There were numerous letters of
support submitted on behalf of Dr. Drake.
One nomination
read, "The degree of integration between the hospital's
infection control efforts and the health department's infectious
disease issues is unsurpassed in my experience in hospital
administration and I believe that is largely due to the progressive
tone Roddy has set in promoting good relationships."
Dr. Drake
endeavors include but are limited to the Five County Community
Care and working with the Rural Health Group to open clinics
in both Warren and Vance counties. He has initiated an aggressive
school health education program involving a curriculum which
addresses STD's, teen pregnancy, and HIV/AIDS prevention
in the middle schools of Vance County.
Dr. Drake
actively participates in many community organizations. He
is a deacon and choir member at his church. He is a member
of the Henderson Kiwanis, Rotary International, Optimist
Club, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, March of Dimes
Walk America, just to name a few.
Dr. Drake
is viewed as a strong community leader with exceptional credibility,
a highly compassionate physician, an aggressive administrator,
and a visionary public servant.
