Health Director of the Year 2004

Robert "Bob" C. Wood

Haywood County Department of Public Health

Bob Wood has been the Health Director in Haywood County since 1996. Prior to his service in Haywood, he served as Health Director in Cherokee County for twelve years. He started his public health career in 1974 as an Environmental Health Specialist at the Cherokee County Health Department.
During his eight years as Health Director in Haywood County Bob has accomplished many great things including
:

  • Starting a public health dental clinic for Medicaid and indigent clients
  • Achieving certification of “Healthy Haywood” as Healthy Carolinians Task Force
  • Initiating the Welcome Baby Program to educate all new parents of county health resources
  • Expanding the Smart Start nurse program for child care centers
  • Achieving a 98% immunization rate for children 2 years old
  • Expanding the bicycle safety education program into the school’s curriculum
  • Receiving over $1 million in grants for innovative projects/expansion of services

At the state level, Bob has been a consistent member of the Executive Committee of the Health Director’s Association, elected by the counties in Region 1 for a great many years. He has chaired a number of committees and had dedicated countless hours to the technology committee in the search of new software to replace the antiquated HSIS system. He can always be counted on the “call the question” thus avoiding unnecessary repetition and discussion

Public Health Vision: Bob “plans the work and then works the plan” and does so with deliberation, determination and respect for the opinions of others. As one of his letters of nomination put it: “…in my mind he typifies exactly what was contemplated when the Health Director of the Year Award was created. One can look throughout his entire 30 years of service to public health and find him influencing policy determination virtually every year in every setting where he has been involved."
